As we age, most of us will start to notice changes in our skin. We may see areas of darkened skin such as freckles, age spots, melasma (sun damage), or chloasma (darkened skin caused by hormonal changes).
There are a several effective ways to lighten skin, but Hydroquinone has proven to be one of the most effective skin–lightening ingredients available.
It works by limiting the formation of melanin, the pigment in your skin that gives it color. Too much melanin clustered together leads to the brown spots. Hydroquinone steps in and interrupts this process while causing brown spots to gradually fade.
Over the past 50 years, Hydroquinone has become the gold standard for dermatologists’ treatment of dark spots.
Over the counter hydroquinone products contain up to 2% concentration. 4-10% concentrations of hydroquinone are available by prescription only and are used under supervision of a physician.
Generally speaking, most people begin to see results within 1-2 month of using Hydroquinone consistently, but more stubborn cases of hyperpigmentation may take a little longer. Keep in mind that the spots didn’t happen overnight, they took years to form. For faster results, this can be used in conjunction with IPL to remove pigmentations faster.
