Nasolabial Folds

Nasolabial Folds

Nasolabial folds are a very common sign of aging that can make an individual look significantly older than they really are. These lines typically run from the corners of the nose to the corners of the mouth, thus distorting the natural contours of the face. To reduce the appearance of nasolabial folds, Life Studios providers can offer a number of treatments, including Ultherapy and improvements to the patient’s skin care routine. To better understand how this condition can be treated, let’s take a closer look at why these folds form in the first place.

How Nasolabial Folds Develop

Nasolabial folds are the direct results of facial expressions we make throughout the day. Laughing, smiling, smirking and even talking can produce a repetitive creasing effect between the nose and the mouth. Just like folding a piece of paper would eventually create a deep crease, so do repetitive facial motions create visible lines on the surface of the skin.

However, there’s a good reason why nasolabial folds don’t appear in our teenage years or in our early 20’s. In our younger years, the skin’s collagen support network is full of tightly interwoven protein fibers that prevent the development of wrinkles by providing support. As we get older, however, the collagen becomes depleted and the skin loses its resiliency.

Another reason for the development of nasolabial folds has to do with the ligaments in the face. Repeated use stretches the ligaments and makes them more relaxed. This further reduces support under the skin and contributes to creasing.

Treating Nasolabial Folds

Life Studios providers can offer a number of minimally invasive treatments to reduce the appearance of nasolabial folds and return a more youthful elegance to the face.

  • Ultherapy:  This treatment uses ultrasound waves to heat up the skin’s support network. The process strengthens existing collagen fibers and promotes the growth of new collagen to rebuild the protein network. One of the positive aspects of Ultherapy is that typically only one treatment is needed to achieve a meaningful improvement in the skin’s appearance. Further, this treatment for nasolabial folds will produce both a short term and a long term result. In the short term, you will notice a slight reduction in the folds after treatment. However, the biggest benefit will be achieved several weeks after the procedure, once the body produces more collagen in the area. Gradual results are great because you don’t have to explain to anyone that you’ve had work done. Learn More
  • Skin Care Routine:  Another approach to improving the appearance of nasolabial folds is through adjustments in your daily skin care routine. Because these wrinkles are not simply the result of increased skin laxity (but include underlying ligaments) topical products alone will not fully eliminate the appearance of these lines. However, Life Studios providers can recommend products that can provide support and stimulate collagen by infusing your skin with moisture and repairing damage with antioxidants.

The Kim Kardashian Method for Preventing Nasolabial Folds

Another approach to reducing the appearance of facial wrinkles and nasolabial folds is reportedly being practiced by Kim Kardashian. The main idea behind this approach is to smile as little as possible, to avoid developing wrinkles and creases around the mouth.

However, here at Life Studios, we don’t believe in this approach. What is life for if not for sharing wonderful moments of happiness with the people you love? Therefore, we think that you should smile as much as possible. In fact, from this moment forward we’d like you to increase your daily laughter and smiling output by 50%. Doctor’s orders.
